A Community Outreach Program
Mountain Mentors, a not-for-profit organization, is committed to impacting the lives of at-risk youth in our community through one-on-one lasting relationships between adult volunteer mentors and teens. Conceived more than 28 years ago by Rev. Everett Mills, this powerful approach to helping juveniles offers a physical challenge similar to Outward Bound, a helping hand like that of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters and a commitment of volunteers comparable to that of the Peace Corps.
Mountain Mentors was formed as a faith-based mission program that offers adult role models who will also serve as advocates for teens in the areas of education, work, family and court. Coupled with a wilderness experience, this year long mentoring program helps young people see themselves and society in a more positive light, shows them a bigger and better world, and offers unwavering love. Our wilderness expedition through the White Mountains of New Hampshire is a physically, emotionally, and mentally challenging experience. Forced to rely on each other while traveling and living in the backcountry provides an adventure parallel to real life where making good choices, being prepared, facing fears, working well with others, and being a leader are paramount to survival. The students begin their trip at Mountain Mentors' BaseCamp located at the foothills of the White Mountains. Here they are fully outfitted and initiated into living in the wilderness. The goal is to summit Mt. Washington, the highest peak in the east. Each month we have group activities such as low ropes course, high ropes course, picnics, community volunteer events, and so forth. Mentors communicate and offer weekly support with their mentee throughout the year.
